LAUREN SHEPHARD
a little bit about me
Hi I'm Lauren, I'm a 21 year old Gibraltarian currently studying Fine Art at Southampton Solent University located in Hampshire, United Kingdom. My aim is to one day become an art teacher preferably at secondary level and continue creating my pieces successfully showcasing them in galleries. This isn't something I like to do at the moment as it's an insecurity of mine but I'm slowly finding the confidence in myself to showcase my work. My experience in school with the teachers I had wasn't great and I eventually lost hope in my desire with art. For this reason it is my ambition to be the best possible art teacher in my small, little country and make a big difference to all the upcoming inspired artists that cross my path. I have undertaken both GCSE and A-Level in art and design and continue to progress onto bigger and better each time and I will soon be hoping to graduate University with a degree in art. Once I graduate my plan is to relocate somewhere else in England to undertake a PGCE course in teaching as this is what I need in order to move onto a teaching career. Photography has always been a passion of mine as I've grown up with two photographers in my family being my grandfather and my dad both of whom are known well in the photography scene in Gibraltar and elsewhere for example my grandfather captured the ever famous photo of John Lennon and Yoko Ono on their wedding day. Following on from photography some other passions of mine include drawing and painting. Since a young age I've always had an interest in painting and simply being creative. Drawing is also something which I have loved to do in my spare time since I was younger and I love to do now whenever I get the chance.
Artist statement
Most recently I've indulged myself in two new skills one of them being working with a palette knife as I find it so fascinating the sharp, crisp edges it engraves on a canvas or desired background. I've always preferred the plain old paintbrush however I am loving learning how to work with the palette knife as well. The other skill is working with pen.
For this new skill with the palette knife I have mainly been using acrylic as it's medium simply because it's my favourite medium and with it being my preferred medium I found it would be interesting to learn the tips and tricks with a new tool.
Working with pen was something I took inspiration from online as I stumbled across someone on instagram who uses pen in a peculiar way. By simply writing the name of the subject in mind over and over this artist creates a portrait of famous people. Seeing this sparked great ideas for one of my latest projects.
Adding on from acrylic some of my other favourite mediums include pencil, watercolour and occasionally clay just because of how relaxing and therapeutic it can be. I have a passion for creating portraits but am now expanding to still life and landscape too with my latest projects. You, my audience is always anyone and everyone I create my pieces to please myself and my ideas and show you a personal side to me and my thoughts as I feel work is best done when there is a personal connection and hopefully it will please you also.
