THE WATER

Within a unit toward the end of first year at university a project I was challenged with was to create however many pieces under whatever theme I wanted to present in a sort of exhibition like structure at the studio space at university. Once given the task three other course mates and myself decided to link all our works to the same theme and present in complete different areas of the studio area. We chose the theme of Fears. Within this project I created a 3 piece canvas series and a performance piece. The set of the three pieces were presented along side each other each were created on a board roughly A3 size and painted on top was acrylic. The first piece was a simple painting of the water starting off at the white bubbly surface of the water becoming gloomier as it reached the bottom of the painting. The second piece had the same structure as the first but with an added figure representing myself having fallen into the water backwards as if I were to be sinking to the bottom. The last painting was a late addition at the end as I only intended to paint two pieces however I had one more board so went for a third piece. This one again just resembled the ocean however it had a swirling effect of bubbles reaching the surface as if it were representing the aftermath of me having sunk to the bottom already.

The performance piece that followed the three piece series was a video overlaid with the sound of the ocean. The video contained the first piece I had created and represented myself destroying the painting itself with watered down acrylic paints. I simply chucked on the watery paints from the top of the painting to create gaps in the strokes of acrylic. The aftermath can be seen below.
